DIY Birdseed Ornaments

Park cooking, part crafting. This DIY is totally fun! Grab your ingredients and get ready to create the perfect outside decor that your feathered friends are sure to love.

Difficultly level: Beginner
Time to complete: 1 Hour
Age range: 8 and Up

Things you’ll need:
Birdseed
Water
Flour
Corn syrup
Gelatin mix
Wax paper
Cookie cutters
Scissors
Drinking straws
Jute
Mixing bowls

Things to do:
1. The first step is mixing the birdseed in with the flour. I used 3/4 cup flour and added birdseed until the ratio of flour to birdseed looked about equal.

2. Pour 1 cup boiling water into a glass bowl and stir in one pack of gelatin and a little corn syrup. Add a second pack of gelatin and stir until it is completely dissolved.
3. Pour the gelatin mix over the flour and birdseed and stir it in. The paste should be fairly thick. Let the mixture harden for a few minutes.

4. Place your cookie cutters on a piece of wax paper and pour the mixture into the cookie cutter. Fill the shape almost to the top.

5. Cut a piece of drinking straw and push it through the mixture, creating a hole.

6. Leave it dry overnight.
7. Once your ornaments have dried, pull them off of the wax paper and remove any excess mixture from around the edges. Pull the straw out.

8. Push the ornament out of the cookie cutter, starting around the edges and moving towards the center to prevent it from breaking.

9. Once it comes out, tie a piece of jute through the hole in the center of the ornament. Tie the jute in a bow, and display your ornament!
