Rhinestone Star Brooch Necklace Tutorial

Difficulty level: Intermediate
Time required: 30 minutes
Age range: 12 and up

Things you’ll need:
Rhinestone stars
Sandpaper
Wire
1/4″ Mint green ribbon
Jewelry pliers
Wire cutters
10mm jump rings
Scissors

Things to do:

  1. Using the pliers, grasp the pin on the back of a rhinestone star. Pull it away gently to remove it from the star.
  2. Rub the back of the star with sandpaper to remove any sharp pieces.
  3. Repeat steps 1-2 until you have a total of nine stars.
  4. Using wire cutters, cut a length of wire that’s about 18″ long. Insert the wire across the back of a rhinestone star, leaving a 3-4″ length of wire as you pull it through.
  5. Wrap a loop around the edge of the star to hold it in place on the wire.
  6. Add a second star, again inserting the wire behind the star and wrapping a loop around the edge to hold the star in place.
  7. Repeat steps 4-5 until you have five stars strung onto the wire.
  8. Now you’ll begin the second row of stars. Insert the wire through the bottom of the last star.
  9. Add the first star of the second row by inserting the wire behind the star.
  10. Insert the wire through the bottom of the second star of the first row, nesting the second-row star between two stars of the first row.
  11. Add a second star on the second row, again inserting the wire behind the star.
  12. Continue across the row until you have a total of four stars. As you you’re your way across, you can adjust the wire to arrange the stars any way you’d like.
  13. Wrap the loose wire around the last star. Cut the wire with wire cutters, then squeeze the wire against the star with the flat-nosed pliers so that there are no wires poking out.
  14. Repeat step 13 with the second wire tail on the first row.
  15. Using pliers, open a jump ring. Do not pull the ring apart at the center as this will weaken it.
  16. Slide the jump ring through the edge of the last star on the first row. Close the jump ring using the pliers.
  17. Cut two lengths of ribbon that are about 46″ long. Insert one length of ribbon through the jump ring, folding the ribbon in half.
  18. Repeat steps 15-17 with the second length of ribbon. Tie the necklace in a bow to secure it.
