DIY Salt Jar Votives with Mod Podge

DIY_Salt_Jar_Votives
Now that the cold weather has started and the days are getting shorter, candles are making a regular appearance in our house. But kids and open flames are not always the best combination, so I try to keep our candles in votive holders to help deter little fingers from the fire. These salt jars are perfect. Made from recycled jars and Epsom salt, they add a beautiful wintery touch to our decor and help keep my little ones fingers away from the flame at the same time.

Things you’ll need:
Jars
Mod Podge
Epsom Salt
Foam brush
Plate

Things to do:
1. Spread a thick layer of salt onto your plate. Use more than you think you’ll need.

2. Holding the jar on your fingers, coat the sides of the jar, all the way to the rim, with a generous coat of Mod Podge. You don’t want it dripping off, but you want enough so the salt will stick.

3. Roll the jar in salt, making sure that the rim also gets covered. Press the salt in gently and check for any blank spots.

Let your little bandits get in on the mustache action with these silly mustache handkerchiefs! If you don’t want to invest in fabric paint, consider fabric medium that can be added to standard acrylic craft paints turning it into fabric paint!

Things you’ll need:
Black fabric paint
Clear contact paper
Scissors
Handkerchiefs
Scrap paper

Things to do:
1. Unfold and press, if necessary, to create a flat surface to work on.

2. Fold the fabric into a triangle and slide the paper in between the layers to prevent the paint from seeping through.
3. Cut a 4×2 inch piece of contact paper out, fold in half and cut half a mustache out along the fold line. Discard the mustache and save the outer section to use as a stencil.
4. Peel the backing off of the stencil and center it on the folded handkerchief.
5. Brush a medium layer of the fabric paint onto the exposed parts of the mustache stencil, be sure to get paint into any small points and allow the paint to dry.

6. Remove the stencil and press to set the paint.
