Difficulty level: Beginner
Time to complete: 30 Minutes (Plus drying time)
Age range: 12 and Up

Things you’ll need:
Pinecones
Bleach
Bucket
Milk Jug
Pine oil scent *optional
Cardboard box

Things to do:
1. Place all of your pinecones into a bucket.

2. Pour bleach directly onto the pinecones. Fill the bucket with bleach until there is enough to cover all of the pinecones.

3. Place a plastic jug on top of the pinecones to keep them submersed.

4. Let the pinecones soak for 24 hours or until you’re happy with the color of the pinecones.

5. Once your pinecones reach a nice white color, remove them from the bleach. Squeeze any excess bleach from the surface and lay the pinecones to dry on a piece of newspaper.

6. Leave the pinecones to dry for 24-48 hours.
7. Place the dry pinecones in a cardboard box and add several drops of essential oil. Close the lid of the box and shake it to distribute the scent.

8. Display your pinecones and enjoy the lovely pine scent!

  1. Great tutorial. I would like to make ornaments from these with a simple bow on top. Will the bleach smell dissipate completely? I get major headaches when bleach odor is present. I know you added the pine scent, but I want to make sure the bleach odor will be gone. Thank you!

    1. Thanks for the kind words, Debbie. Great question about the smell! They will smell of strong bleach when they are in the process of being bleached obviously but the smell should dissipate after a few days of them being completely dry. If you’re concerned about the bleach smell still being on the cones once they are dried, you could try rinsing them off under water after the bleaching process. They will be wet from the bleach already and the water should help rinse off any residue. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Happy crafting!
