Square Knot Beaded Hemp Bracelet
This is a simple craft for children to make. Along the same lines of a friendship bracelet, this fun and easy craft can be customized with different beads or different colored strings.
Things you’ll need:
Hemp twine or other cord
Scissors
Beads
Ruler
Clipboard
Transparent tape
Things to do:
1. Cut one string 72 inches long. This will be your working string.
2. Cut second string 36 inches long. This will be your core string.
3. Find the mid-point of the strings and twist into a simple looped knot.
4. Place loop into clipboard to hold it down.
5. Arrange strings so the shorter, core, strings are in the middle and the long, working, strings are on the outside. Loosely tape down the core strings.
6. Take the working string on the left, and take it over the core strings, leaving a little loop.
7. Bring the working string on the right over the other working string, under the core strings, and through the loop.
8. Gently pull the first half of the knot up the core strings.
9. Bring the working string on the right over the core strings leaving a little loop.
10. Bring the working string on the left over the other string, under the core strings and through the loop on the right.
11. Gently pull the knot up the core strings. This seems complicated, but once you’ve done a few, you’ll see how simple it is!
12. Continue making square knots for about two inches. Place on wrist to gauge bead placement. Keep knotting until loop is under the wrist and beads will be across top of wrist.
13. To add beads, release the core strings and slide a bead up the strings.
14. Using the working strings, make a square knot under the bead.
15. Add additional beads as you like, making knots under each one.
16. Knot another two inches (or so) of square knots. Verify fit on your wrist.
17. When the bracelet is the right length, place a bead over all strings.
18. Tie a simple loop knot and trim ends, leaving 1/2 inch or so for fringe.

If you’ve ever had to resort to drastic measures to get a favorite hemp bracelet off your wrist, you’ll appreciate learning a few closure techniques. While making closures takes a little more time and effort, you’ll be rewarded when you can slip your beloved bracelets off and on with ease. Let’s take a look at a few hemp bracelet closure techniques:
Sliding Switch Knot Closure
With a sliding switch knot closure, the knot slides up and down to tighten and loosen the loop around a bead, button, or knot on the other end.
1. Start your bracelet with 2 lengths of cord, folding one of the lengths in half. Lay the folded length atop the second length, leaving it unfolded. The folded length will be the base, and the crosswise cord will be the knotter.
2. Use the crosswise length to make a series of square knots (two to four), and then test by sliding the knots up and down the base cords.
3. To take the bracelet off, slide the knot back to loosen the loop and slip over the button or bead on the other end; to close, slip the loop over the button and move the knot forward to tighten.
Bead or Button Closures
As functional as they are beautiful, bead and button closures are a cinch to add to any hemp bracelet.
1. Start your jewelry piece off with a looped end that will be big enough to slip over the button or bead.
2. When your piece reaches the desired length, slip a bead or shank-style button through all four lengths of cord. If the hole isn’t large enough to fit all four lengths, snip off one or two cords and then hold the snipped strands in place with a dab of glue.
3. Slide the bead or button onto the remaining cords and secure with an overhand knot.
