Craft Travel: Silk Painting in Paris

Does the image of the Eiffel Tower fill you with travel lust? Is silk-painting one of your crafting passions (or a skill you’d love to learn?) If you answered yes on both counts, there’s a trip especially for you.

Textile artist, Francophile and longtime Paris resident Teena Hughes offers a 1-week silk painting class and tour of the City of Light. You’ll learn the history of silk plus how to use different dyes and techniques to create your own elegant silk creations. As a class project, each student completes her own personal map of Paris on silk to take home as a souvenir of her artistic experience in Paris.

Classes meet in the mornings. In the afternoon, Teena takes students on visits to places like fabric store and silk dye stores. Students also participate in a guided bus tour of Paris, a visit to Montmatre and a champagne cruise on the Seine. The trip includes accommodations at a 3-star hotel, all breakfasts included and two group dinners. You’ll have enough free time, with advice and support in planning, to explore the city on your own. Although the trip itself begins with airport pickup from Charles DeGaulle Airport, members of the class communicate and get to know each other beforehand through a private e-mail group.

For crafters planning a shorter visit to Paris, Teena also offers shorter programs: a 1-Day Silk Painting Class and 1-Day Textile Taster Tour. She also offers a week long Plus Size Paris Shopping Adventure. Even if you don’t plan on taking one of her tours, you’ll find her website helpful if you are planning a trip to Paris. She offers tips, based on years of experience of Paris life for things like where to find the best hot chocolate in the city; how to order coffee from a French waiter; and locating English bookstores or internet cafes.
