Wooden Spool Wreath Tutorial

Difficulty level: Beginner
Time required: 2.5 hours
Age range: 12 and up

Things you’ll need:
Painter’s tape
Utility Assortment Paintbrush Set
Coated Natural Jute Twine
Acrylic paint in Lavender, Bimini Blue, Meadow Green, Blue Bonnet, Lemon Chiffon
8 – 2-1/8″ x 1-1/2″ spools
40 – 3/4″ x 5/8″ spools
26 – 1-3/16″ x 7/8″ spools
Green Box Wire Wreath Frame
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
White satin wired ribbon

Things to do:
1. Wrap the ribbon around the wreath, overlapping it, until the entire wreath is covered. Don’t worry about being too neat; this part will not be visible once you add the spools.

2. Cut the ribbon in the back of the wreath.

3. Add a dot of hot glue to secure the ribbon edge.

4. To create a hanger for the wreath, cut a 12″ length of jute twine.

5. Knot the twine around the wreath.

6. Prep a wooden spool by wrapping a length of painter’s tape around each edge, getting as close to the edge as possible.

7. Using a paintbrush and acrylic paint color of your choice, paint the center of the wooden spool.

Tip: The paintbrush set is great for this job. Use a larger paintbrush on the large spools, then use the smaller paintbrush for small and medium spools, plus touch ups.
8. Repeat steps 5-7, painting each wooden spool.
Tip: It’s fastest to tape all the spools, then do all the painting. However, if you do not have a lot of painter’s tape, you can re-use the same tape over and over again. You can also cut the painter’s tape in half up the middle to create two lengths. Once the spools have dried, remove the painter’s tape.

9. Begin adding spools to the wreath starting with the largest and adding a thin line of glue on both edges of one spool. Attach it to the wreath.

10. Continue adding large spools, spacing them out around the wreath and turning them in different directions.

11. When you have used all the large spools, add the medium spools.
Tip: You may want to save some of the medium spools for later so you can use them to fill in any large empty spaces.

12. When you have used all the medium spools, add the small spools.

13. Fill in the spaces as best you can with the remaining spools. Your wreath may be full before you use all the spools, so don’t worry about trying to use all of them. (You can save those for future DIY projects!)
