Treasure Bag

If you’ve ever looked in the bottom of a mother’s purse you know that kids like to haul around little trinkets and treasures. I know mine always seems to have minute dice, small plastic animals and the inevitable little car floating around with the pennies and gum wrappers. If your child likes to tote little dodads around like mine, try making this small treasure bag for them, you might just be able to keep the bottom of your purse clean!

Things you need:
2 – ten by six rectangles of cotton quilting fabric
Grommet and Grommet pliers or Grommet kit
4 inch length of ribbon
Sewing machine and notions
Scissors

Things to do:
1. Decide which fabric will be on the outside and which will be the inside of the bag.

2. Fold the outside fabric, right sides together, along the long side (creating a five by six rectangle)

3. Sew along the long edge and one of the short edges leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
4. Fold the lining fabric in half as well, right sides together, but this time only sew the long side.

5. Turn the outside piece right side out and slip the lining piece over the top of it so that the right sides of each piece are together and the openings at the top are aligned. Stitch around the top opening with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

6. Pull the lining right side out so that you now have one long tube with one enclosed.

7. Fold in the raw edges and stitch closed on the end of the lining.
8. Tuck the lining into the outer pocket and top-stitch around the top edge.

9. Using your grommet kit, attach a grommet at one of the upper corners of the bag and then string the ribbon through, tying to create a loop that can hook onto a belt or backpack.

  1. I would add a strip of velcro to the top for a closure to keep those little doodads in the bag. This is a great idea and one I plan to follow up on – thanks!
