Jingle Bell Stick

Every December, one of my neighbors hosts a huge caroling party complete with most of the kids from the area. While the older kids know the songs and sing, the younger ones are usually given instruments to accompany the music. Things that jingle are always popular amongst this group and we run out of these instruments each year, so I’m thinking ahead and making a gaggle of these simple but oh-so-jingly bell sticks for all those little hands.

Things you’ll need:
Wood dowel rods
Paint and paintbrushes (optional)
Ribbon, various sizes and colors
Jingle Bells
Craft Glue

Things to do:
1. On a covered work surface, paint the dowels if desired. You can always leave them unpainted and let the ribbon and bells be the decoration, but a little paint makes them brighter!
2. Cut the ribbon into 2-3 ft. lengths.
3. Once the paint is dry, Attach the end of one of the ribbons near one end of a dowel with the glue. Wrap the ribbon around the dowel a few times and then string a bell on, pushing it down against the dowel. Wrap again a few times and then repeat, positioning the bell in a different spot on the stick. Continue in this manner, wrapping ribbon and adding bells, leaving enough room at the other end of the stick to hold on, until you reach the end of the ribbon.
4. Glue the end down and repeat the process with a different color of ribbon until the dowel is well covered with ribbons and bells. Make sure all the raw ends are well glued down and allow the bell stick to dry before giving it a whirl.
