How to Make Your Own Watercolor Napkins

Things you’ll need:
Cotton or linen napkins
Scrap cardboard or other work surface covering
Watercolor paints in various colors
Iron
Soft paintbrush
Spray bottle filled with water (optional)

Things to do:

  1. Iron the napkin to remove any wrinkles.
  2. Place the ironed napkin on top of the work surface covering to protect the surface from paint.
  3. Add a small amount of the first color of watercolor paint to a cup, then add water to dilute it. Stir the paint so that it dissolves in the water.
  4. Using the soft paintbrush, begin adding strokes of paint to the napkin. You can draw a design or just swirl the paintbrush around.
  5. Continue to add paint until you’re happy with your design.
  6. Repeat steps 3-5 with a second color of paint.
  7. If your paint isn’t blending well with the other colors, you can add a squire of water to the napkin to moisten it.
  8. Repeat steps 3-5 with a third color of paint. If you’d like, you can go back and add more of the other two colors of paint. Continue blending until you are happy with the design.
  9. To complete the design, we dipped the paintbrush in the darker paint color again, then flicked the paintbrush to create small dabs of color on the napkin.
  10. Continue painting and blending until you are happy with the final design, then allow the napkin to dry completely.
