How to Make Your Own Marbled Pompoms Tutorial

Difficulty level: Beginner
Time required: 15 minutes per pompom
Age range: 8 and up

Things you’ll need:
Yarn in two different colors and weights
Pompom maker
Scissors

Things to do:

  1. If the two pompom maker pieces are not already connected, go ahead and connect them. Pull the circles away from the middle of the pompom maker.
  2. Using the bulkier of the two yarns, begin wrapping the yarn around the half circle.
  3. Wrap the first color until you have wrapped the yarn around the circle with two or three times thickness. Place the first color of yarn to the side, but do not cut it.
  4. Begin wrapping the second thinner yarn over the first bulkier yarn until you have covered the first layer of yarn.
  5. Wrap the thicker yarn again, wrapping only until you have covered the thinner color. Cut the yarn, cutting it so the tail is even with the top of the half circle.
  6. Wrap the thinner yarn once more, wrapping until you have covered the thicker color and created a full, thick half circle. Cut the yarn even with the top of the half circle.
  7. Close the first half circle into the pompom maker.
  8. Repeat steps 2-7 to wrap the other half of the circle. Try to make the second half of the circle equally as thick as the first half.
  9. Using scissors, cut the pompom loops in half on both sides of the pompom maker.
  10. Cut a 6-8″-long strand of the thinner yarn. Wrap the strand around the center of the pompom maker. Pulling tightly, tie the strand in a double knot.
  11. Pull the half circles away from the pompom on both sides, then remove the pompom from the maker. Give your pompom a haircut, trimming around it to make the edges even. If you are attaching the pompom to something like a gift bag, you can leave the long tails. Otherwise, trim them away.
