How to Make a Yarn Winter Hat Christmas Ornament

This is a great project for using leftover or scrap yarn. You can use one color, or mix it up and make a striped hat using multiple colors of yarn.

Difficulty level: Beginner
Time required: 30 minutes
Age range: 8 and up

Things you’ll need:
Toilet paper roll
Pencil
Scissors
Yarn
Fiberfill

Things to do:
1. Measure 1″ from the edge of the toilet paper roll and mark it with a pencil.

2. Cut the toilet paper roll so that it measures 1″ tall.

3. Cut strands of yarn that each measure about 10″ long. The number of strands you cut will depend on the thickness of your yarn, but you can always cut a few to get you started now and add more as you need them.

4. Working with one strand at a time, fold the strand in half then insert the loop through the center of the toilet paper roll.

5. Bring the yarn tails over the roll and through the loop.

6. Pull the tails to secure the yarn around the roll. (If you’ve ever made fringe before, this is the same technique.) The knot should rest on the edge of the roll.

7. Repeat steps 3-5, sliding the strands of yarn close together as you work.

8. Continue until you have filled the entire circumference of the toilet paper roll.

9. Grab all the yarn ends together, then push them through the center of the toilet paper roll.

10. Cut an 8″ strand of yarn, then use your finger to comb the strands neatly.

11. Double knot the 8″ strand of yarn around the yarn tails, making sure all the tails are secured.

12. Trim the strand you knotted, as well as the yarn tails. The yarn tails should be trimmed short enough that they look like a pompom.

13. Stuff a bit of fiberfill inside the yarn hat to hold its shape.

14. Tie another 10″ strand of yarn around the pompom, then knot it at the top to use it as an ornament hanger.
