How to Make a Felt Flower Hair Clip

You can make this bloom any size you’d like. Adding the leaf is totally optional, but it’s a great way to embellish your flower.

Difficulty level: Beginner
Time required: 15 minutes
Age range: 12 and up

Things you’ll need:
Cup, coaster, bowl, or any other round object for tracing
Pen or marker
Scissors
E6000 glue
Turquoise Felt Sheet (or color of your choice)
Kelly Green Felt Sheet (optional)
Curved Alligator Clip

Things to do:
1. Place the round object onto the turquoise felt. Here, we’re using a coaster. (Note that the larger your round object is, the larger the flower will be.) Using a pen or other tracing tool, trace a circle onto the felt.

2. Cut out the circle using scissors.

3. Begin cutting the circle into a spiral by first clipping the edge of the circle. Since the flower is widest on the outside, start by cutting a wide strip.

4. Make your way around the entire circle, slowly reducing the width of the spiral as you cut.

5. When you reach the center of the felt, stop cutting, leaving a small circle in the center. You should now have one spiral all the way around the circle of felt.

6. Starting on the outside edge of the spiral, begin tightly rolling the felt., keeping the bottom even as you roll.

7. After you’ve rolled an inch or two, pause to place a dab of glue on the flower.

8. Continue rolling until the entire flower is rolled up. Place a dab of hot glue on the outside of the flower, then glue the outermost layer of the flower to the glue, leaving the small center circle free.

9. Place a dab of glue onto the bottom of the flower. Grab the center circle.

10. Fold the center circle over onto the bottom of the flower.

11. Add a dab of glue to the bottom of the flower.

12. Place the flower onto the clip, placing it an inch or so from the edge so that you leave room to open and close the clip.

13. Optional: If you’d like to add a leaf, draw a leaf freeform onto the green felt using a pen or other tracing tool.

14. Cut out the felt leaf.

15. Add a dab of glue near the bottom part of the felt leaf.

16. Lift the side of the flower up with your finger, then place the leaf as close as possible to the bottom of the felt flower. Arrange your leaf any way you’d like. We placed ours at an angle, but anything works!
