Bzz! Bzz! Spring time brings out the first bumble bees of the season, but you can make your own adorable (and safer!) bees yourself from ribbon. Add this to a barrette as shown, or glue to a pinback and wear on your lapel.

Difficulty level: Intermediate
Time required: 45 minutes
Age range: 10+

Things you’ll need:
Yellow grosgrain ribbon
Black grosgrain ribbon
French barrette
Scissors
Hot glue gun
Hot glue sticks
Wood burning tool
Piece of glass from a picture frame

Things to do:
1. Warm up your hot glue gun and wood burning tool. Cut a piece of ribbon to the size of the barrette and glue in place.

2. Cut a piece of black ribbon to 4-5 inches long and glue into a long teardrop shape as shown.

3. Cut a piece of yellow ribbon and a piece of black ribbon to 4″ long. Lay the ribbons on the glass and cut in half the long way using the wood burning tool.

4. Cut one black and one yellow piece to 3″ long and form into circles, gluing together as shown.

5. Glue these around the large part of the tear-drop shape you previously created.

6. Cut one black and one yellow pice to 2″ and glue into circles. Glue those around the thin part of the teardrop as shown.

7. Cut a piece of black ribbon to 3/4″ and glue to the top as shown.

8. Wrap the ends around the back, creating a head for your bee.

9. Cut two very thin pieces of black ribbon with your wood burning tool and glue to the top for antennae. Trim them to the size you desire.

10. Cut a piece of yellow ribbon to 5 inches long and form into a figure 8, gluing in place.

11. Glue the wings to the body of the bee, between the large and small circles.

12. Glue the bee to the barrette.
