Embroidery Thread Storage with Clothespins

Embroidery_Thread_Storage
I’ve just started embroidering again after a long hiatus and can’t seem to help myself when it comes to buying new colors of floss. The problem comes when I start to use a new bundle of thread and instantly everything becomes tangled, not to mention the mess that results when I try to store all of my floss between uses! Thankfully I’ve found a simple solution that works perfectly and looks good too!

Things you’ll need:
Clothespins
Embroidery thread

Things to do:
1. Open the clothespin and place the end of the floss between the large and small holes then clamp it shut.

2. Wrap the thread around the pin between the hinge and the large hole until you have wound the entire packet of floss.
3. Pull the end in between the mouth” of the pin to secure it.

  1. I think the clothespin idea for floss is great. You could either write the color # on the clothespin or you could tape that part of the label around one of the arms.

  2. What a clever idea! They would also make delightful gifts, especially for those whose hands dont cope well with tiny floss holders. Paint up a set of clothespins as a personalized gift for your favorite embroiderer!

  3. Seems like this method of storage would take up a lot of space not to mention being difficult to peruse all the colors when selecting for a project. I simply use the floss cards and the traditional divided plastic boxes made for the purpose and since I have almost all the colors in the DMC range the colors are arranged according to color families and stored in one plastic portable file carrier with a handle. This way I can pull out whichever box has the colors I need and they are all on view at one time. Using the numbers would work, too I guess, if you have one of the DMC floss charts with actual thread samples but I like seeing the colors grouped together in families. The file box is relatively compact storage for the several hundred colors and is easily carried.

  4. I think this is great! I like these creative fun ways to store rather than the store bought kind.Im gonna go find some clothes pins- thanks!
