Easy Fun Pointillism Teacups!

Pointillism_Teacups
We drink a lot of tea in our house. Coffee as well, but only in the mornings, Tea is an all day thing around here. Even our kids have a mug of weak, mostly milk tea after school to ward off the chills. And they are very particular about having their own special cups for their tea. We’ve made and bought a few different variations of personalized and special teacups over the years (they do get broken after all). Our most recent incarnation of the special teacups were these pointillism inspired beauties. They were so fun and easy; I’m planning on making a few extras for the grown-ups in the house!

Things you need:
Food safe ceramic paint and clear glaze (try searching for PermEnamel… they even have kits!)
Skewers or toothpicks
Plain white mug or teacup (check your local charity shops)

Things to do:
1. Wash and dry your cup. If your paint requires a surface conditioner, coat the surface that you will be painting with it and allow it to dry before proceeding.

2. Using the sharp point of the skewer or toothpick, dip the very tip into one of your paint colors, do a few test dots of scrap paper to make sure you have just a teeny bit of paint on the tip and start spelling out your word or forming your shape with evenly spaced dots.
3. Continue to form your shape (swirls and letters are great!) until you have covered the area that you want covered and allow the paint to dry according to the manufacturers directions.

4. Coat the painted surface with clear glaze and allow it to dry overnight before using.

  1. Woahh.. That’s a great idea. Sometimes hand-painting your own tea cups can look kind of cheesy or sloppy (because we’re used to perfection perhaps?) The pointillism seems to fit the delicate nature of the tea cup in a way that doesn’t compromise the charm of the cup. Thanks for this great idea!
