DIY Vintage Button Necklace

As a sewing nut, I have a lot of buttons… lots and lots of buttons, all over the house. Jars of them. Some are new, some are vintage, all of them are cool. I’m always looking for fun things to do with my button collection and this is a fun and out of the ordinary way to show off my favorites. If you are a sewer as well, these buttons can be sewn onto the felt, but you can also glue the buttons on to the felt for a no sew version.

Difficulty level: Easy for the glue version, slightly harder for the sewn one
Time required: 30 minutes

Things you’ll need:
Buttons
High temp glue gun and glue sticks or thread and needle
Felt
Scissors with scarp tips
Necklace chain
Jewelry bails

Things to do:
1. Choose your buttons. Here we’ve chosen almost all black or white buttons with a few gold thrown in for contrast, but you could go with any color scheme or just a mish mash of colors.

2. Cut a rectangle of felt slightly larger than the button spray you want in the finished necklace. Arrange the buttons onto the felt until you have a layout that you are satisfied with.
3. Glue or stitch the buttons in place, keeping them tightly packed in together.
4. Once the glue is dry or the buttons are sewn on, carefully trim away the excess felt, taking out as much as you can without destabilizing the piece.
5. Glue or sew a bail onto the ends of the piece where you want the chain to connect. Attach the chain to wear.
