DIY Personalized Wood Letter and Name Decoration

It’s almost Spring again and that means Spring cleaning! In our house we are taking this opportunity to redecorate our little man’s bedroom and he decided that his door was a little too “boring.” So we came up with this fun monogram letter that we can hang on the outside. It’s a great way for him to have a special sense of ownership and it was fun to have a little mommy and son time!

Things you’ll need:
1 – Large wood letter
Small wood letters
Wood cutout shape
White acrylic paint
Black acrylic paint
Ribbon (of your choice)
Foam paint brush
Matte sealer spray

Things to do:
1. Begin by sanding the larger letter to your liking. Be sure to sand down any rough or splintery edges. You want everything smooth to the touch before you start to paint. Check your smaller letters and cutout embellishment, in case they need a quick sanding as well.

2. You can choose to seal your large letter before or after you paint it. Sealing it before you paint will save you a little bit of time during the painting process, as you wont need as many layers of paint. Sealing it after you are done painting protects the surface from any scuff marks or minor chipping. I would recommend doing both.

3. Now begins the fun (and messy) part of the project… painting all the letters! Lay out an old piece of cardboard or newspaper to protect your working surface. Tip: Try using a couple of push pins on the back of your cutouts to lift them off of the table. This way they wont stick to your working surface while they are drying!
4. Allow all letters to sit for 30 minutes, or until the paint has completely dried. After they are dry, add another coat of paint and repeat the process until you are satisfied with the coverage.
5. Once your letters are completely dry, you are ready to put everything together. Before you start any gluing, you want to play with the placement of all your small letters and your cutouts. When you are completely satisfied with your arrangement, lightly mark the area around the cutouts so that you know where to place them again when you start to glue everything down.

6. Heat up you glue gun and begin carefully gluing all the pieces in their proper place. Don’t forget to add your wood cutout embellishment and a simple ribbon hanger on the back of your letter! Easy peasy!
