DIY Glitter Keys

To get into my building, and then into my apartment, I need three keys. Which look absolutely identical. Which means that it tends to take a couple of tries to get the right key, especially after a long day. Adding a little sparkle to my keys helps keep them apart and, as a bonus, makes something everyday a little more exciting.

Things you’ll need:
Keys
Glue
Fine Glitter
Clear Nail Polish
Pencil

Things to do:
1. On a covered work surface, coat the shank of the key with a generous coat of glue.

2. Sprinkle a thick layer of glitter onto the glue, patting slightly to make sure it sinks in well.

3. Press the pencil through the hole to make sure it’s totally clear of all glitter and glue.
4. Allow the glue to set up completely before repeating with the other side.
5. Once both sides are dry coat them with clear nail polish to protect the glitter from abuse in your bag. Allow the nail polish to dry overnight before reattaching to the key chain.

  1. WONT THAT GLITTER CHIP WHEN PUTTING ON A KEY-RING? DONT THINK GLUE AND FINGERNAIL POLISH WILL WORK BUT JUST MY THOUGHT.

  2. I absolutely LOVE this idea. But I also do wonder how well it will hold up, and for how long. I expect some damage just by placing the key back on the keyring, but I wonder how long it will last before the nail polish wears off and the glitter just flakes off the key.

  3. What if you changed the glue to some slow set up clear epoxy or something a little more durable? Id also lightly sand or steel wool the key to give the glue/epoxy something to really adhere to… just my two cents on a cute idea!!

    1. Oh I really like the idea of using clear epoxy! I think that would work very well! Thanks for the little tip as well!

  4. I did this 4 months ago with the clear coat of finger nail polish and have had no issues. The polish did not chip when I put the key on the ring and it has not worn off. This is a key I use 6 days a week for the office. The gliter is just as sparkley today as it was 4 months ago. Thanks for the great idea!
