DIY Felt Pinecone Tutorial

Pinecones are telling sign of autumn and winter, but sometimes we can’t find them near our houses or when we do, they’re not the right size for decorating. Create your own pinecone using felt and a Styrofoam egg. No one will be fooled, but everyone will appreciate your kitschy creativity!

Time to complete: 1 hour
Age range: 12+

Things you’ll need:
Brown felt sheet
Styrofoam egg
Scissors
Hot glue gun
Glue sticks
Ruler

Things to do:
1. Cut several pieces of felt lengthwise, making each 2″ wide. I used 5 pieces for this project but you can use more if you’d like more layers.

2. Cut scallops into one side of each piece as shown.

3. Carefully snip between each scallop, making sure you don’t accidentally cut the scallop off. Warm up your hot glue gun.

4. Roll the first piece of felt tightly as shown, just a few inches down the piece. Glue in place after a few wraps.

5. Glue this to the top of the egg, then continue wrapping this piece to the egg, glueing as you go. Take another piece of felt and wrap it adjacent to the first, continuing to wrap down the egg.

6. Add all the pieces to the egg, wrapping down to the bottom. There will be an open spot at the base, so cut a piece of felt as shown to fill it.

7. Glue the final piece to the bottom of the egg, completing the pinecone.
