DIY Faux Snow Balls

Just the thing for your winter displays, these faux snowballs are glittery and fun without the bother of melting ice in your house! Be sure to use white Styrofoam balls for the base so that you get a nice white finish in the end.

Things you’ll need:
Styrofoam balls
Mod Podge
Epsom Salt

Things to do:
1. Working on a covered work surface, paint the ball in sections with a generous amount of Mod Podge and then press in a good coating of salt.

2. Continue to add Mod Podge and salt until the whole thing is covered.
3. Scoop a heap of salt onto the surface and roll the ball in to fill in any places that might have been missed. Allow it to dry in the pile of salt to keep it from sticking to the work surface.

  1. How could you make these where they can be outdoors? Could you use fake snow instead of the salt? Would mod podge hold in the weather? Sorry about all the questions but am looking for snowballs for an outdoor decor.

    1. Hi Gail! Thanks for all your questions. Im thinking you could try to use this same technique with the Epsom salt but use the Hard Coat Mod Podge. After you have made your snowballs, spray a generous amount of sealant over each one. This may make them suitable for the outdoors, but I have not personally tried this. You could also do a glitter/Hard Coat Mod Podge mixture and cover the styrofoam balls. These would make lovely snowballs as well, you just wont get the same bumpy texture like you would with the Epsom. Hard Coat Mod Podge isnt completely water proof but rather water resistant, so the snowballs wont last forever in the elements. I hope this helps a little. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

    1. Hi Julie! Mod Podge is a type of glue but it is also a sealer and finish. You can find the different types of Mod Podge that we offer here: factorydirectcraft.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=mod+podge&submit.x=0&submit.y=0

  3. Love this! adding it to KAwartha Lakes Mums Frozen board on Pinterest!

  4. How could you make the snow balls look old or antique. I need it to look not so white maybe old primitive looking.

    1. That is a great question Rusty! I would recommend trying to dry brush the balls with an antiquing medium/paint of your choice once they are completely finished. Dry brushing should add the primitive finish you are looking for without melting the Epsom salts. Best of luck!
