Chalkboard Paint Placemats

I don’t know about your house, but in mine, dinner usually consists of the kids scarfing down their food before the adults have taken their first bite and then complaining of being bored while waiting for everyone else to finish. While eating slowly and enjoying your food is something we are working on, it’s a hard lesson when you are five and sometimes it’s nice to have a little something to do while you wait for everyone else to finish. Which makes these chalkboard placemats perfect!

Things you’ll need:
Vinyl placemats
Chalkboard paint
Paintbrush
Chalk

Things to do:
1. On a covered work surface, lay out your cleaned and dried placemats.

2. Paint a thin coat of paint along any stitch lines and around the edges of the mat.
3. Coat the entire mat in a thin coat of paint. Allow this to dry for about an hour and then add a second.
4. Continue to paint a layer and allow it to totally dry until the placemat is completely black. Let the paint cure for 10 days before using. Wipe gently with a warm washcloth to clean.

    1. Thanks 🙂 We used vinyl placemats, because the cloth ones would just soak up the paint and wouldnt work out as well as the vinyl ones. I hope this helps!

  1. Those chalkboard placemats are awesome. I am going to get some for gifts. They would keep the kids occupied forever.

    1. I would probably not wash them. I havent tried this myself but I think the paint would crack and chip. So I would just wipe down with a damp cloth and that should work.
