Stitched Wax Paper Valentines

Stitched_Wax_Paper_Valentines
I have a strong dislike for the mass printed Valentines cards that appear in every grocery and drug store every year as soon as the Christmas lights come down. They just aren’t interesting enough and, increasingly, seem to feature violent looking characters, which just doesn’t make sense when you are talking about a day dedicated to love. So in response, I’ve spent the last few years thinking up fun and kid friendly valentines that do not come out of a thin cardboard box, and this year is no different. Because my son is now old enough to work the sewing machine (teach your boys early and they’ll love it!) he’s doing most of the work this year with me serving as the supervisor and occasional paper holder. But these are also fun to do yourself and can be made out of just about any paper. Red tinted vellum or leftover wrapping paper would be excellent alternatives to waxed paper for this project.

Things you need:
Wax paper
Scissors
Sewing machine
Red or pink thread
Candies, little gifts or messages

Things to do:
1. Cut two pieces of waxed paper into a heart shape slightly larger than the gift you want to enclose. This craft works best with flattish treats such as M and M’s or Conversation hearts or simple written messages.

2. Holding the two layers together, stitch around 3/4 of the shape using a zigzag or decorative stitch 1/4 inch from the edges.

3. Without removing the paper from the machine (it helps to leave it in the down position) slip the treats or messages into the heart before stitching the rest of the way around to seal up the package.
4. Trim all of your threads before giving.

Felt Valentine Envelope

Felt_Valentine_Envelope
There’s nothing like a real Valentine. You know, the kind that comes in the mail with a stamp and a real address. E cards are nice, but real mail is such a treat. Even better than a real paper valentine though is a real fabric one, something made with a little extra love for your sweetheart. This simple felt valentine’s envelope is just the thing to hold a message of love for your special someone.

Things you need:
Red Felt Square
Sewing machine
White thread
Scissors and pinking shears
Scrap of white felt
Ruler
Velcro

Things to do:
1. Cut your felt into a 12 by 5 inch strip, using the scraps, cut a small heart and a just slightly bigger square of white felt.
2. Fold roughly in thirds so that one end is slightly shorter, trim that end to a point like a regular envelope.

3. Stitch fold lines and a faux triangle fold onto the felt using the white thread.
4. On what will be the front” of the envelope, stitch the heart and square on to create a stamp. This can be done with a zig zag stitch to mimic the stamps edge or you can sew the stamp” on using a wave stitch to mimic the cancellation mark on a letter.

5. Fold the bottom half of the envelope up and stitch along the edges to create a pocket, leave about a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
6. Trim the edges and the triangular top with pinking shears for a cute finish.
7. Attach a Velcro patch to the underside of the point of the flap and to the corresponding spot on the envelope so that it can be closed securely.
8. Slip in a note and close and hand it off to your Valentine!
