How to Make Burlap Roses

Use these primitive-looking burlap roses to add to wreaths, gifts, or even hair barrettes and headbands. Once you’ve accomplished the folding technique, these burlap roses are a quick project!

Difficulty level: Intermediate
Time required: 20 minutes
Age range: 10+

Things you’ll need:
Burlap ribbon
Floral wire
Piece of matching felt *optional
Pencil
Scissors or wire cutters
Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks

Things to do:
1. Cut your burlap ribbon to about 24″ long. Warm up your hot glue gun. Fold the burlap in half and roll the short end a couple of times, glueing in place.

2. After the first roll, fold the burlap down about 90 degrees. Roll the burlap around the center about a half turn, and glue in place.

3. Continue rolling and then fold the burlap again. Keep glueing every so often – about every half turn around the rose.

4. It’s okay if your fold opens up – in some ways it makes the rose look more realistic!

5. When the rose is the size you’d like, trim of the excess burlap ribbon.

6. If desired, cut a piece of felt to cover the back of the rose. This can be added to a barrette, lapel pin, or package.

7. If you’d like to make a stemmed rose, insert the stem through the center.

8. Loop the stem and push down into the center so it’s not visible. This should keep the stem in place, but if not, you may use some hot glue. Trim the stem in the length desired.
