Warmers for Rainboots

During the fall and early winter, my children practically live in their rainboots. Actually, one of my kids wore rainboots every day for a year, rain or shine, hot or cold. But particularly this time of year, we spend a lot of time with our rainboots on. And while they do a great job of keep our feet dry, they aren’t very warm. Enter the wellie warmer. These cozy socks slip inside rainboots and help keep your toes cozy and dry. Who could as for more on a blustery fall day?

Things you need:
1 yard of fleece
2 feet of 1/2″ elastic
1/4 yard quilting cotton or yarn to knit a cuff
Thread, scissors, pins and a sewing machine
Butcher paper and pen
Measuring Tape

Things to do:
1. Slip on your boots and, using your measuring tape, determine how far up your leg the boot goes. Mark down this measurement.
2. On the butcher paper, trace the side of your leg around your foot and as far up as the measurement you just took for the height of the boot. This will be pattern piece A.
3. Trace the bottom of your foot onto the butcher paper as well. This will be pattern piece B.
4. Cut out four pieces of pattern piece A, leaving 1″ all the way around.
5. Cut two of pattern piece B, leaving 1/2″ all the way around.
6. Pin two A’s together and sew from the heel up to the top and from the point of the toe up to the top. Do not sew across the top or the bottom. Repeat with the other two pieces.

7. Pin pattern piece B into the bottom of the boot, easing around the corners. Sew in place. Repeat with the second boot, remembering to flip the sole for the other foot.

8. Try on the liners to check for fit and make any necessary adjustments. Trim all seams to 1/8″.
9. Measure around the top opening of each liner and add 1/4″. Cut a piece of the quilting fabric to this length and 6″ tall. Hem one of the long edges and then fold in half lengthwise to stitch up the side. You can also knit this cuff by using the length and height as a guide and knitting the pattern of your choice to create this piece.

10. Turn each liner inside out and slip the cuff, wrong side out, over the top of the boot. Stitch around the top edge.
11. Pull the cuff out of the boot and stitch the elastic just under the seam between the two fabrics, pulling slightly on the elastic as you sew to add tension.
12. Turn the boot liner right side out (seams will be on the outside) and fold the cuff over so the right side is facing out. Slip on your boots and pull the cuff over the top edge to secure.
