Valentine Petal Garland with Felt

Garlands are a double whammy when it comes to decorations and crafts. For one thing, they are generally very very easy to make, almost anything can become a garland of some kind or another. And for another, they can act as so many different things. Wind them around a form and you have a wreath, drape them across a fireplace and you have a swag, wrap them around a box and you have a beautiful gift. This little garland is as inexpensive and easy to make as they come and is just right for all sorts of Valentines Day decoration.

Things you need:
Red and white felt, 1 sheet of each for a 6-foot garland
Sewing machine
Scissors
White thread

Things to do:
1. Cut a petal shape, approximately three inches long and one wide, from a piece of scrap paper for a pattern.
2. Using the pattern cut 12 petals out of each color of felt (or any combination that will get you to 24) They don’t have to be totally identical so don’t stress too much on making them perfect.

3. Load your sewing machine with white thread in the bobbin and on the needle. Starting with one petal, sew down the very center of the shape, backstitching a few stitches only at the very beginning to lock the stitches.

4. Let the machine take a stitch or two after the end of the first petal and insert the next at the point. Continue sewing down the center and then adding the next petal until you have sewn all the petals into a long string, backstitching at the end of the last petal.

5. Cut the string with about a 6-inch tail. This allows you to have something to tie the garland on at the beginning and end if needed, if it’s not needed, trim the threads from both ends.

  1. LOVE the garland idea. It would be easy to make a pretty Christmas or scarey Halloween garland. I’m gonna have to give this idea a try!
