Upcycling: Toilet Roll Bird Feeder

Toilet_Roll_Bird_Feeder
Now that fall is here, it’s time to start feeding the birds for the winter. During the leaner months, providing bird food for your neighborhood feathered friends will guarantee that they give you a show every day. This little bird feeder is a great reuse of empty toilet rolls and is simple enough for even small fingers to help with!

Things you’ll need:
Peanut Butter
Birdseed
Toilet tubes
Ribbon
Knife
Coffee filters or paper towels
Plate

Things to do:
1. Spread peanut butter over the outside of the cardboard tube as if you were icing a cake. You don’t want a ton, but you’ll want enough for the seed to stick well.

2. Pour the seed into the plate and roll the tube around, pressing the seeds in as you go.

3. Set the tube upright on a paper towel or coffee filter and move on to the next one. After a few minutes, re-roll the tubes so that any empty spaces where seeds have dropped can be filled in.
4. Thread one yard of ribbon through the opening of each tube and tie the top in a bow. Hang up in a tree and watch the birds flock.

  1. I smiled when I saw this, very inventive certainly practical for this time of year. Mine will be hanging in the garden this weekend. That will make my neighbours smile, yet again!!!

  2. My concern with this is that the toilet paper rolls have an ink in them that can cause lead poisoning and harm or even kill the animal which I would think from the oils in the peanut butter would pull this ink away from the roll and contaminate the peanut butter. My sister used to let her mouse use them as burrows and even without eating the cardboard the poor little guy was so sick he eventually passed and there was no way to treat these animals.

    1. I have found no where that toilet paper rolls contain lead. I did find the toilet paper rolls and toilet paper work well for hamsters. you may want to check your sources.

  3. A better idea would be to use pinecones, its a lot more natural and it looks a bit better than toilet paper rolls. Plus you dont have to go throw out the pinecone when everything is gone

  4. Love this idea, and am going to do it with my daycare kids. However, we cant have peanut products at our school. Any ideas for a substitute??? THANKS )

    1. Great question, Reema! You can use any peanut butter substitute. I’m not sure what the rules are for your school, so I don’t know if you can use other nut butters. If you can, almond, hazelnut, macadamia, soy and walnut butters would be great to use. If you can’t use nut butters, you could consider using seed butters. Cashew, pumpkin, and sunflower butters would be good to use. Best of luck and I hope the kids love making their own bird feeders!
