Potato Print Checkers Board

Chess and Checkers are a long time favorite in our house. They are both a great game that both kids and adults can play together, especially checkers. And while we have ourselves a nice, fancy board, this more casual version has been great for taking on trips to the beach, to the park or even for a backyard game. Because it rolls or folds nicely, it’s the perfect solution for an on the go game board.

Difficulty level: Moderate
Time required: 30 minutes plus dry time

Things you’ll need:
Potato
Sharp pairing knife
Burlap fabric
Acrylic craft paint
Newspaper
Scissors
Sewing machine and thread

Things to do:
1. Cut a square of burlap for the game board. The size is really dependent on your game pieces, as you’ll need a 12 by 12 grid that will fit the size of your checkers. Press any creases out of the burlap.

2. Stitch all the way around the burlap to keep the edges from fraying. Trim away any threads or fraying pieces.
3. Cut the potato in half and then, using your game pieces as a size guide, cut a square shaped stamp at the cut end of the potato.

4. Lay the burlap out on newsprint to absorb any paint that works through the open weave of the fabric.
5. Dip or paint the stamp with paint and stamp onto the burlap, skipping a stamp sized piece between each stamping to create the grid.

6. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly before using.
