Pony Bead Math

I’ve got a little girl who is just starting to understand the concepts of math. As grown ups, we take for granted that 5 means 5 of 10 means 10, but it’s been fascinating to watch her come to grips with what number actually mean. This Pony Bead math project is perfect for this stage. It gives kids a visual for numbers, helps them understand how different combinations can lead to the same outcome and plus, it’s fun and easy to make!

Difficulty level: Beginner
Time to complete: Five minutes

Things you’ll need:
Handwritten or typed worksheet showing number combinations
Pipe cleaner
Pony Beads

Things to do:
1. Thread the number of beads onto the pipe cleaner for the number you are working on.

2. Press the ends of the pipe cleaner through the paper and fold over in back to secure.

3. Demonstrate how you can slide the beads up and down to make different number combinations.
