When it comes to indulgences, it’s hard to top decadent cupcakes and long, hot soaks in the tub. With this fun and creative craft, you’ll get the best of both worlds. since you won’t actually be eating the cupcakes, you can indulge to your heart’s delight.

Bath Bomb Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups of baking soda
1/2 cup citric acid (from a health food store)
1 tablespoon oil of your choice (rice bran, almond, grapeseed, or olive oil will do fine)
5 drops of fragrance or essential oil
1 tablespoon water

1. Mix the baking soda and citric acid together to form a smooth powder, and then blend in the oils until the mixture is the consistency of wet sand. Drizzle in the distilled water, covering the water with the mixture as you pour. Be careful not to pour in too much water at once, or your mixture will start to fizz. Continue adding and mixing in water until the mixture feels like crumbly pie dough.
2. Working quickly, press the mixture into a cupcake pan or into silicone cupcake liners. Be sure to use pressure and pack the cups until they’re nice and tight.
3. Let bath bombs set up for 10 minutes, then remove from the pan or peel off the silicone liners. Now, we’re ready to frost!

Bath Bomb Frosting Ingredients:
2 1/2 tablespoons dry egg whites or Meringue powder
4 tablespoons warm distilled water
1/4 teaspoons cream of tartar
1 1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 tablespoon SLS Foaming Agent (optional)
4-6 drops of fragrance
4-6 drops of color
Disposable frosting bag and your tip of choice

1. Mix dry egg whites, water SLS (if applicable) in a glass bowl, then add remaining ingredients (except for fragrance). If the mixture is too stiff, add a little more warm water. Mix on high for 7 minutes or until peaks form, and then blend in fragrance.
2. Spoon mixture into disposable frosting bag, then frost bath bombs however you like. Let dry overnight.

While cupcake bath bombs look delicious enough to eat, make sure to let everyone know they are NOT edible. Whip up a batch for your own bath enjoyment, or share as a thoughtful pampering gift for the new mom in your life. Enjoy indulging yourself and everyone on your gift list with this sweet craft.

  2. I was so excited to make these but am really struggling. 🙁

I think your ingredient measures are a bit off. First, I wasn’t sure how much water to use for the actual ‘cakes’ so I guessed and I think I used too much. Perhaps 1Tbsp is right? No water at all is listed in the ingredient list so I winged it. That’s not too big of a deal though, I might have recovered with a little oven time. The bigger problem is the frosting. I’m never in a million years going to get 4Tbsp of water in all those dry ingredients to form stiff peaks. I looked at other recipes online and found a very similar recipe that calls for 3Tbsp of egg whites, not 2 1/2 cups. That’s a HUGE difference. Any chance you could double check these? They’re so beautiful but I’m just not having much luck. Pllleeeaaassseee help.

    1. Oh my good gosh! Yes, it does seem the recipe is wayyy off on the icing! I will correct both the “cakes” by adding the water to the recipe and I will definitely change the cups to tablespoons for the icing… that is a huge difference. I apologize for the typo. Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. I hope that your cupcakes turn out better this time! Let me know if you have any other questions and I will try to help as best as I can.

  3. Thank you so much for updating. That egg white stuff is pricey. They turned out looking OK but they smell really eggy so I popped the tops off and kept the bases for myself for my own baths. The second time around created some pretty little cupcakes that my friend loved. I also added yellow soap colorant to the bombs so they’d look like yellow cake.

I didn’t have much luck getting mine to “set” which might have been because of my water issue but I can say that in case another reader has that problem, it does work to bake them on the lowest setting for about 20 minutes. Keep an eye on them but it works. They still fizz in the tub just fine. I even baked them some more once I frosted them just to make the frosting set. I left them in for a loooong time and they’re so pretty and they work great.

  4. possibley a really stupid question, but Im new to all of this, what colouring do i use? food colouring or a different one? thanks x

    1. Not is not a silly question at all Eliza! You can use food coloring when you are making your bath bombs but the color may fade quickly and it may even leave color rings around your tub. It is better to use coloring that is made for soap making. You can find this about anywhere that sell soap making supplies or you could even try online stores such as Amazon. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

  5. These look like a great project my daughters baby girl shower! Please say how many this recipe will make. Thanks!

    1. Karen, The recipe should make about a half a dozen. This is also dependent on the size of your cupcakes you are making. If you are making miniature cupcakes, you could probably make around a dozen. I think they would be wonderful for a baby shower! Congratulations 🙂

  6. Im having some trouble with these. Maybe you can help. I followed the frosting part exactly, and got stiff peaks, but for some reason when i used them in the tub they didnt bubble up?
