Kid Friendly Popsicle Stick and Twine Spring Butterfly Tutorial

Create this cheerful little string butterfly in many different colors. If desired, you can draw a cute face on the wooden bead, or leave it blank as we’ve done.

Difficulty level: Intermediate
Time required: 30 minutes
Age range: 8+

Things you’ll need:
Baker’s twine
Small Popsicle sticks
Wooden bead
Pony beads
Pipe cleaner
Scissors
Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks

Things to do:
1. Warm up your hot glue gun. Place your popsicle sticks into a shallow X and glue together in the center. Don’t cut the twine. Glue one end of the twine to the center of the X and wrap it around a few times, as shown.

2. Start wrapping the twine in a figure-8 configuration, making sure you go around all four sides.

3. Continue wrapping, as shown.

4. As your approach the ends, you can begin wrapping straight around the sticks, as shown. Wrap as far out to the ends as you’d like. Shown here I’ve wrapped to the middle and later decided to add on to the wings – you can do whatever you’d like for the look you’re trying to achieve.

5. Add two pony beads to the center of the pipe cleaner.

6. Wrap the pipe cleaner around the center of the butterfly, as shown.

7. Thread both top ends of the pipe cleaner through the bead.

8. Pull the bead down to the top of the sticks as shown.

9. Twist the tops of the pipe cleaners to look like antennae.
