How to Make Cornstarch Dough

Once upon a time, I was a kindergarten teacher where I spent a lot of time making, working with, rolling out (and cleaning up) salt dough. It’s a fabulous, easy to make dough and I’ll always love it. But it’s not always my go to playdough. While salt dough is great for many things, it’s not the best for projects requiring very white dough or very smooth dough. Fortunately, there’s an alternative that is almost as easy to whip up which makes a pure white, silky smooth dough perfect for baking up into lovely things or just for playing around with. Cornstarch dough.

Difficulty level: Easy, but requires the use of a stove and adult supervision to make
Time required: 25minutes

Things you’ll need:
Corn starch
Baking soda
Water
Bowl
Pot
Spoon
Plastic wrap

Things to do:
1. Measure out 1 cup of corn starch and 2 cups of baking soda and pour them into your pot.
2. Slowly add 1 1/2 cup water, stirring as you add. If you want colored dough, add the food coloring to the water before you mix it in.
3. Turn on the stove and, stirring constantly, cook over medium heat until the dough begins to thicken.
4. Immediately dump the dough into your bowl and cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Leave the dough to cool.
5. Once cool, sprinkle corn starch on the counter top, turn the dough out and knead until silky smooth. You’ll have a lovely dough that will stay pure white even when baked, perfect for holiday ornaments.

6. To cook finished objects, Preheat your oven to it’s lowest setting. Set clay objects on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake until hard (time will depend on how thick the objects are. Flip them over every 10 minutes or so to speed the drying process.
