Grommeted Mason Jar Lid

Have you noticed? Everyone’s drinking from mason jars these days. They are the new water bottle, to go mug and coffee cup, and for good reason. Sturdy and inexpensive, they come in packs of 6 or more depending on the size and are great for holding anything from water to wine. I’ve long been a fan of jars as cups but have found one problem with them. I spill. Call me clumsy, but I seem to slosh the content of my jar onto my lap about half the time and almost always when I’m unscrewing the lid. The solution? A straw hole that will hold up in the wash and protect little fingers from sharp metal.

Things you’ll need:
Mason lid jars
Grommets (look for a size to accommodate your choice of straw for best results)
Grommet tool
Awl or large nail and hammer
Straw

Things to do:
1. On a flat, protected work surface, lay down the lid of your jar and, using the awl or nail, hammer a hole in the center of the jar. Work the awl or nail around until its large enough to accommodate the taller lip on your grommet pieces. Press down any jagged edges.

2. Insert the taller piece of the grommet in from the top of the lid and flip it over onto the base of the grommet tool. This will keep the smoother side of the grommet on top.

3. Slide the shorter grommet piece over the hole and insert the tool into the center. Give the grommet several good solid wacks with the hammer, making sure the grommet pieces are all the way sealed together.

4. Place the lid on your jar, secure with the ring and insert your straw!
