How to Make a Football Mum

It’s football season! If you’re from the south, you’ll already know what these mums are but if you’re not, you may not be familiar with the fun tradition of creating outlandish mums for homecoming. These giant corsages can be customized to your students favorite sports of activities with different charms and to your school colors with different ribbons or flowers. Best of all, they’ll make a great keepsake for that special game.

Difficulty level: Moderate
Time required: 1 hour

Things you’ll need:
Silk mum
Ribbons in your school colors of varying widths
Football charms
Megaphone charms
#1 charms
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Stapler
3 Cardboard circles or paper plates
Safety Pin

Things to do:
1. Begin by creating the backing for your flower. Cut 8 inch pieces of one of your ribbon colors and loop them so that the ends cross over. Staple these loops around the edge.

2. Repeat this process with a second color of ribbon, setting the new layer of loops a little closer into the circle and between each loop of the first color.

3. Remove the stem from the flower and glue into the center of the ribbon covered circle.

4. On a second cardboard circle, staple long (3-4 feet) lengths of the two ribbons you used for the backing on, hanging straight down. You’ll want to cover the whole bottom half of the circle.

5. Add more ribbons in different colors and patterns to the circle.

6. Using very narrow ribbon, cut 6 foot lengths of ribbon and fold them in half, thread the ends through the charms and tie to secure. Staple these ribbons at the halfway point fold near the center of the circle.

7. On the third circle punch small holes on one side and fit the safety pin in with the open side out.

8. Layer the three circles together, first the flower layer, then the ribbon layer then the safety pin layer, gluing the three together and pressing tightly until the three are fused together.
