DIY Recycled Newspaper Flower Embellishments

I get a special kind of thrill making something beautiful out of something that would otherwise be thrown away so this pretty little flower made out of nothing more than leftover newsprint and paper scraps has me a little giddy. The secret here is the use of a circle punch to make uniform petals and a proportional base. While we’ve used a 2-inch diameter punch, any circle size will work to create a stunning flower.

Difficulty level: Easy
Time required: 10 minutes

Things you’ll need:
Newspaper
Scrap paper
Glue
Circle punch
Scissors
Markers

Things to do:
1. Cut circles out of the newspaper. Doing several layers at a time will get a sharper edge with the thin paper. You’ll also want to cut a circle out of a heavier piece of scrap paper for the base.

2. Stack several of the circles together and push them about 3/4 of the way back into the punch and cut to make the petal shape. Repeat with the remaining newspaper circles. For this size flower you’ll need 20 petals.

3. Spread a thin coat of glue around the outer edge of the base circle. Lay the points of the petals at the top, bottom and sides. Add petals in the spaces between.

4. Roll enough petals to make another layer around a fat marker to slightly curl them and repeat the process of gluing them, this time moving them in slightly toward the center.

5. Roll the remaining petals tightly around a skinny marker to curl them more tightly and glue with their tips touching at the center of the circle.

6. Cut a smaller circle of scrap paper or add a button to the center of the flower to finish.
