DIY Mini Fabric Flag Cupcake/Cake Toppers

We are a summer birthday family, everyone has their birthday between Memorial and Labor Day, which means that I’m about to hit party season and I’m starting to plan now. Birthdays aren’t birthdays in our house without a cake and my kids love fun cake toppers. This summer at least one of them is going to get these cute mini flags decorating their cake but these would be adorable as table decorations, scaled up a little for parades or for some medieval make believe! And they are so easy, why not make a whole slew of them?

Difficulty level: Easy
Time required: 10 minutes plus dry time

Things you’ll need:
Fabric, light cottons work best
Skewers or dowels rods
Craft glue
Fabric stiffener
Iron
Scissors

Things to do:
1. Press your fabric well and spray thoroughly with fabric stiffener. You want is nice and damp but not dripping wet.
2. Hang the fabric to dry so that it dries nice and flat. Once dry the fabric will be very stiff.

3. Cut the stiffened fabric into strips as wide as you want your finished flags. Here we’ve made them about one inch wide.

4. Cut your strip into flags, adding a little extra to the straight end to wrap around the skewer.

5. Spread a thin layer of glue onto the flat end of the flag and roll the fabric around the dowel until it wraps once around. Pinch in place for a few moments until it’s holding and then allow the glue to dry before using.
