DIY Faux Leather Box

This project turns a standard craft paper box into something a little more glamorous thanks to some very humble materials. Be sure to start wiping the paint off before it dries for the best leather effect.

Things you’ll need:
Paper mache box
Mod Podge
Paper bag
Brown acrylic paint
Paintbrush
Paper towels
Gloss clear coat (optional)

Things to do:
1. Rip small pieces off of the paper bag, making sure the edges are nice and rough.

2. Coat the lid, or if it’s large, a portion of the lid, with a thin coat of Mod Podge. Smooth on several pieces of the torn paper to cover the top.

3. Continue to layer Mod Podge and bits of paper until you have a rugged, leathery top. Allow the Mod Podge to dry completely.

4. Once the top is dry, add a small drop of brown paint to the surface and rub in with your fingers. Immediately start wiping it off so that it only sticks in places.

5. If desired, coat the whole box with glossy clear coat for shine.
