DIY Fairy Wings

I have a little someone in my house who loves, more than anything, to dress up. Princesses, doctors, lambs and lions, she’ll happily dress up as anything. But her favorite thing of all when it comes to dress up is a fairy. In fact, she’s been known to wear fairy duds to the shops and school and everywhere in between. The key to dressing up like a fairy, of course, is the wings. If your little fairy is in need of a new pair of wings, as fairies often are, here’s the project for you. Glistening, sparkly wings.

Difficulty level: Expert
Time to complete: 45 minutes

Things you’ll need:
19 gauge wire
Floral tape
Shrink wrap sheets or large bags
Spray glue
Glitter
Wire cutters

Things to do:
1. You’ll need three lengths of the wire, each slightly shorter than the last. The length required depends on the size of the fairy. For this pair we unwrapped 5 coils for the largest, 4 for the middle and 3 for the smallest from the spool of wire.

2. Gently open up the largest length of wire, retaining some of it’s roundedness and allowing the center to overlap in a circle. Twist the point where the wires cross several times.
3. Repeat this process with the other two lengths of wire, each should have a slightly smaller circle under the twist and slightly shorter ends.

4. Line the three up so that the tops of the circles meet. Using the floral tape, wrap the section where all three layers meet, working down toward the circles. Continue to wrap, securing the wires together, until you get to the largest circle, wrap around that and then work your way back up. You now have the skeleton of the wings. The O sections create a frame to help hold the wings under a shirt to keep them in place without ribbons or elastic.

5. Lay a section of shrink wrap out on a flat covered work surface. Spray it lightly. Lay the frame of the wings onto the shrink wrap, sprinkle lightly with glitter and immediately cover with a second layer of shrink wrap.

6. Using your scissors, cut out the wing shape around the frame. Bend the wings slightly out to make the wings stand out from the back.

7. Spray the backside of the wings lightly with the glue and glitter liberally.
8. Tuck the O-frame into the neck of your fairy’s shirt and let them fly away!
