Upcycling: Emergency Candle Tin

It’s always a good plan to have a few things set by for an emergency, and light, is no exceptions. Make this pocket sized emergency candle that will easily slip into a purse, backpack or glove compartment is a snap.

Things you’ll need:
Mint tin
Candle wicks
Wick tabs
Candle wax
Double boiler
Thin book of matches

Things to do:
1. Rinse and dry the inside of your tin and start your wax melting in your double boiler.

2. Once the wax has melted, dip the ends of your wicks into the wax and press them in the center of the tin, you’ll want two wicks for a standard sized tin to maximize the light you’ll get from it.

3. Pour wax until it’s just below the hinge openings of the tin. Set on a flat surface and allow it to harden.

4. Once the wax has hardened, trim the wicks and tuck the matchbook inside.

Heart Punch Butterflies

Paper butterflies are handy little things to have. Adorn a card or a gift, use them as tags, line them up and frame them as art or just leave them around to be, well, pretty little butterflies. And using this method, you can turn scrap paper scraps into butterflies in a snap.

Things you’ll need:
Scrapbook paper
Heart punch
Scissors

Things to do:
1. Cut a rectangle from your paper, just wider than the punch so that you can hold it on each side and twice as long as the heart.
2. Fold the paper in half and crease well.

3. Slip the paper so that the fold is on the point side of the heart. Pull it so that the fold can be seen below the point and punch.

4. Pull out the heart and unfold your butterfly.
