There’s something soothing about the repetitive motion in weaving. This is the perfect project for a rainy day when you want to relax and create something beautiful. All you need is jute and a pair of scissors to get started!
Difficulty level: Beginner
Time to complete: 30 minutes
Age range: 12 and up
Things you’ll need:
Mason jar
Jute
Scissors
Things to do:
1. The first step is measuring your mason jar to determine the length of string you’ll need to work with. Simply turn your mason jar upside down and run your jute from one side to the other. Times this length by 10 and cut seven more pieces of jute in the same length.
2. Next, we’re going to get ready to weave! Divide your pieces of jute into two sets of four. Place one set running vertically on your table and one set running horizontally. Tie the sets together in the middle where they meet.
3. Once you get going, weaving your jute isn’t difficult – all you have to do is tie knots! Start by double knotting your strands 1 inch from the center knot. When you have your first set of knots tied, the jute should create a shape that looks like a flower.
4. Repeat your double knotting pattern, tying two new pieces of jute together 1 inch from your last set of knots. Continue knotting your jute until you’ve created a web large enough to hold your mason jar.
5. Place your mason jar on the center of the web, pull the strings of jute up, and knot them above the mason jar.
6. Fill your jar with flowers or a candle, display and enjoy!
