How to Make a Felt Leaf Bunting

Bring the autumn leaves indoors and create this gorgeous leaf bunting for your fall decor. You can use many different types of leaf shapes, as well as any of the colors you see on your trees this time of year! A sewing machine is recommended for this project.

Difficulty level: Intermediate
Time required: 1 hour
Age range: 10+

Things you’ll need:
Yellow felt sheets
Brown felt sheets
Burgundy felt sheets
Scissors
Sewing machine (though you can hand-sew with a minor modifications)
Paper
Marking tool

Things to do:
1. Collect a few leaves! In my neighborhood we have maple, oak, and tulip poplar – among others – but I thought these were the big, boldest leaf shapes that I wanted for my bunting. Trace them onto paper.

2. Cut out your paper leaves.

3. Pin and trace your templates onto felt. Double the felt layers if you want to reduce your cutting time.

4. Cut out all the leaves.

5. Stitch down the middle of a leaf, then keep the machine running as you stitch on air” for a couple of inches, before adding a second leaf and stitching through it to make a chain of leaves. If you are sewing by hand, you won’t be able to create the chain of stitches between the leaves, so they’ll be closer together.

6. Here’s your chain! You can now use this to create your bunting or form into a circle and stitch on a blanket or pillow.
